Now updated: Ramadan calendar -

My husband and I have been married for 6 1/2 years. I am American and he is from Africa but has been living in America for over 10 years and become a citizen. I have many health issues and am not able to have any children with him, so have agreed that he take another wife so he will be able to have children. Due to my health concerns, I find it hard to maintain employment, and must rely on my husband for financial support as according to Islamic law. Recently he decided that he is moving back to Africa and marrying a women over there, and leaving me in America. He says he will come back to visit me every year or two, and I feel that is unfair. To make matters worse, he and his family are very wealthy, and he will be living a very good life in Africa. He says I must move into government housing projects and work to support myself and he will send me support as he can. I know this cannot be acceptable! He will be denying me my rights to support, and care of the husband,,but she will have all those rights provided to her. I feel this is a highly unfair situation, but he says it it the way of his culture and they way other women in his family live. I honestly feel that this is a way of him pushing me to the side and an abuse to my life. I am afraid to divorce due to the fact that I have no means to support myself finanically and have no family to help me. What can I do? How do I approach this issue?

He is totally unfair to you. And whatever his culture maybe but Islam is above all, Islam should be the culture. And for him to do a second marriage, he has to maintain equality between both the wives in every aspect.

Holy Qur'an says,

And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]. [Holy Qur'an 4:3]

And you are his responsibility. It is the duty of every husband to support his family financially according to Islam.

And one thing more, as you both were married in America and now he is a citizen of America. And you have said that he belongs to a wealthy family. Then according to the Law of America, if he gave you divorced then he should pay half of his wealth to you.

And please remember, never talk in harsh manner to your husband if you know your rights. Because anger will only increase the differences between you and him. Be calm and peaceful while discussing this matter with him.
