My best friend is Muslim and when I asked him and his family what Muslim means they all said, "follower of Allah through Islam." I keep seeing on this website muslims saying that everyone is born Muslim. How can you be born something without knowing what it is. It takes years of wisdom to become something whether it be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or part of any other religion. That's why God created us in a way to choose for ourself right? Otherwise God would be Communist/hypocrite which he is not. Please explain if I have missed something cause even my Muslim friends say the same thing as I do.

I do want to say that I, myself, am Christian and have no intentions to change this but I do respect those who respect me and my belief.

we belive that everyone was made to worship god so when we were created we are muslim the definition of muslim is one who submits to Allah so because we were made to worship him we are already muslims but then as you grow older the enviroment around you wether it be you parents or people at school or things you see online you forget why god created you and many people go astray off the path of worshipping god but we also belive that many of us dont go astray and we are muslims we have been submitting to god since we were born other thatn the times we make mistakes like we all do but we then make up for it by asking for forgivness so we were all born to submit to god so we were born muslim but some go astray and some stay on the right path hope you understand now. May Allah Guide you and us all to the straight path.

You said, "muslim is one who submits to Allah so because we were made to worship him we are already muslims." Submit is an action and when a baby is born he knows not and does not submit. Instead the baby throws tantrums towards his parents which is a sin but not knowing it is a sin. That starts the second a baby is born. Where then does the Muslim come in?

(Mar 01 '12 at 18:59) ChristianForKnowledge ChristianForKnowledge's gravatar image

but we were made to do this not that the child was already doing it but the mind was still innocent and was untainted with any evil thought and throwing a tantrum for a child is not a sin we belive you begin to be accounted for you sins at ten years old so if by ten years old they arent following gods rules they arent muslims anymore because up to that point they werent being accounted for their sins so after that age if that child was raised an athiest they are now considered an athiest and if you convert to islam we dont think of it as converting but as reverting as a an innocent child is

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:12) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

My question now is, 'How is throwing a tantrum against your parents not a sin when it is written in the Ten Commandments to obey your parents?'

Also, 'Where in the quran or any other book does it speak that you are unaccounted for your sins till the age of ten?'

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:21) ChristianForKnowledge ChristianForKnowledge's gravatar image

it dosent only depend on the quran we also listen to the prophets and do you honestly think that a baby is sinning when they dont know whats going on they have to mature first before Allah will start judging them on what they do God is the most merciful he isnt gonna take a babies tantram accountable against them

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:24) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

The prophet was telling the muslims they they are allowed to start punishing children for not praying at the age of ten this is one quote i can think at the top of my head

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:29) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

Where does that quote come from? I have a copy of the Quran in hand.

Also, I mean no disrespect to you or your faith. I am just wanting to become more knowledgeable on Islam. I know the rules here and that's why I feel I must keep saying this.

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:35) ChristianForKnowledge ChristianForKnowledge's gravatar image

we have the quran wich is the word of god and we have sunnah book which is quotes by the prophet that his friends and wives have said quotes by him and peole who heard him say it also confirm it if its not confirmed by three people its not written and there is a chapter in the quran where it says that you also listen to whatever muhammad tells you because i have sent him for that reason so we also take the sunnah books for guidence and i was mistaken i read somthing just now that said you are accounted for praying at 10 and everything else is left untill puberty

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:39) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

but still the same idea we are muslim untill we stray away from it

(Mar 01 '12 at 19:41) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

I have just been all over the internet and even called my muslim friend and he, and the internet does not say that the Sunnah are quotes of mohammed but is only based upon his teachings which in terms comes from the quran (but only sections). The Sunnah didn't even come about until 1728 (from a Islamic website). So, which is it now? There can only be one right answer yet I get many completely different answers from so many islamic sites.

(Mar 01 '12 at 20:53) ChristianForKnowledge ChristianForKnowledge's gravatar image

look up bukhari or sahih muslim this is what a sunnah book is it did not come out in 1728 this source is mistaken maybe they meant a translated version but these books came out long before that and right the source of where each quote came from the man who wrote the book died in 870 so it couldent have come out that time your friend has probably never heard of the book but only the prophets quotes these books have gathered all the quotes together because prevously they were told orally not read

(Mar 01 '12 at 21:14) NesreenA ♦ NesreenA's gravatar image

also a sunnah is somthing the prophet intstucted us to do or did himself a sunnah book is a book of all he has said

Salam,

Please allow me to explain why we say and believe that everyone that is born is been born as a Muslim our Lord informed us in His Qur'an and says, [And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of this unaware] [7 v172] Allah gathered all the progeny of Adam before they were born and came in to this world and they were all inside of the back of Adam,Allah took them all out of the back of Adam and formed them in pairs, then made their facial features and shapes, then gave them the power of speech. When they began to speak, He took a covenant from them by asking them, (Am I not your Lord?) They answered, (Verily, You are our Rabb) Allah then stated, "I hereby make all the seven strata of heavens and earth as well as your father Adam a witness unto you lest you should employ an excuse of being unaware of it on the Day of Resurrection, just like our Lord says, [Or [lest] you say, "It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?] [7 v173] and also when we were having this conversation with our Lord He informed us where we will be residing in and that He will remind us of His signs so we can recognize just like He tells us and says, , [We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve] [2 v38] and also says, [And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally] [2 v39] and also Allah says, ([He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know] [2 v22] Allah says here, [So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know] meaning every human been knows who Allah is and when they hear His name they respond without them realizing.

So you see now why we say everyone is a Muslim at birth that is because we have submitted to Allah before we came in to this world but was made to forget this conversation for a test and the freedom of choice too, that is why Allah kept on sending messengers to remind us and to reason with us through His signs that is all around us that is why Allah says, [And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return] [7 v174] Allah wants us to remember Him through His signs and return to him as we gave our covenant to Him that we will always be submissive to Him.

Muslims usually in their ignorance or misunderstanding say things like every one is born a Muslim.

Here is a good explanation for a common misunderstanding

Hope this clarifies.

Greetings of peace my brothers and sisters, Please allow me to try to explain the position of the "Everybody is born a Muslim" phrase. God willing. A child being born is the mercy and direct act of god. This child cannot do anything but allow (submit) this Godly action of birth. The only thing this child knows is what God has put into this childs anatomy/mind/brain. Thus making the child "One who submits or "Muslim"". The "tantrums" as my brother kindly put it is the "alert system" the child is instilled with to let the caretaker know the child needs attention only because the child cant speak in common language. Now this way of understanding is the reason for the phrase. This position is sometimes taken to extremes and may God forgive those who abuse this understanding and may God also bless the rest of us with a clear understanding to this way of thinking and not intentionally cause chaos and sow discord over something so simple. May God continue to bless You all with HIS infinite wisdom.

Salam,

I am sorry if this offends you but you are just proving my point. Another reason to be careful of reading misleading translations the likes of one you read.

Here is the text of the Hadeeth, see if you can find tne word Islam in it anywhere. Its not in the Hadeeth and its not in the Ayah Abu Huraira(ra) quoted.

The Shaykh knows what he is talking about as he is a teacher of Bukhari, and does not depend on translations to understand the text.

This is one of question that i selected to answer within my ability. As i am new Muslim, this is how i understood it.if you can go back to the history of this world you may understand it much clearly. the reason is, most of us know that Adam and Eve as fist human couple on the earth. just think critically some of whom follow Adam and Eve some of them were not. in this point of view you try to mind mapping what people of the past have done in order to prevent from fear, agony. they tend to biliefs and worship even trees ans stones, sun and moon. so just imagine if our gran gran parenst were some of them that who did the same ritual won't you believe them? certaingly you do as that is what you see. in fact Islam does not blind anyone with fals beliefs.it aquare knowledge, read, understad.when someone is embrace Islam she or he feels the reality and the purpose of this life no dout no confusion at all dear brother and sister. i would like to just to you all epecially who ask question about Islam(non Muslim). first you try to read the translation of the al-quran then ask question from yourself do not ask others.for sure you will find all the answer to your question.then we will ask question from others.do you know why i say that? eaxh person has limited knowlegde of anything.it is like ten blind folded men try to discribed an elephant.as each person touch only small part of the elephant.so in oder for yo have vast knowledge please read the translation of the al-quran inshAllah. May Allah be with you all.

Please do not call me ignorent ask me where i recived such information then accuse me of being ignorent this hadeeth is by prophet muhammad saaws and this goes over any sheikh that says otherwise we listen to the prophet first then the shiekh:sahih bukhari Volume 2, Book 23, Number 441:

Narrated Abu Huraira :

Allah's Apostle said, "Every child is born with a true faith of Islam (i.e. to worship none but Allah Alone) but his parents convert him to Judaism, Christianity or Magainism, as an animal delivers a perfect baby animal. Do you find it mutilated?" Then Abu Huraira recited the holy verses: "The pure Allah's Islamic nature (true faith of Islam) (i.e. worshipping none but Allah) with which He has created human beings. No change let there be in the religion of Allah (i.e. joining none in worship with Allah). That is the straight religion (Islam) but most of men know, not." (30.30)

No one is born to be Muslims but religion such as christianity, judaism, and islam all believe in one devine god (Allah). As all religions belive their religion is the greatest, they say that every one is born Muslim just like some Christians would say everyone is born Christian. The same is for Judaism. When we dont contradict the Christian or Jewish opinions, why does our opinion have to be contradicted. Arent the teachings of all three religions the same? Worship one and only god (Allah)and no one else. Love one another as you would love your family. Take care of the planet.

As for ignorance, arent we all ignorant in some way? As muslims, we dont think of ourselves as ignorant. We are actually more wise and learned and that is why many islamic scholars and caliphs are well educated and have a satisfying career.
