I have been married 7 months and me and my husband work and earn our living together in Dubai and my inlaws live in Pindi. For the last 4 months, my husband lost his job and I was running the house and my husband used to say that he will take all my responsibilities once he gets a job. Now he has got a job but said that he will send a major chunk of his income to his home and after that whatever minimum amount is left, he will pay the house rent, food and bills but he told me to pay the deficient amount. The problem is my brother in law is also coming to Dubai to stay with us and he already has a job here but my husband is not taking any money from him. My point is that I was supporting him before but now I dont want to pay as now our house includes my brother in law as well who will not be paying anything. I am earning a good salary and have responsibilities towards my parents and I also do some savings as well for my future children as my husband cannot afford any of my expenses (my clothes,my gynecological visits or medical problems). What does Islam say about this? Please let me know as I have tried to talk to my husband about this but he does not listen to me when it comes to his family.

According to Islam, it is the duty of Husband that he should do work and support his family financially and it is not the responsibility of the wife to support the family financially, the wife is only responsible to care of her husband, children, house and guard her modesty. I do agree that Islam permits a married woman to do work to support her family but it would be count as a favor of the wife. You are not in any way bound to pay the bills of your in-laws but if you do it would be a favor.

Holy Qur'an says,

Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. [Holy Qur'an 4:34]

The above verse summarized in the best manner the duties of a husband and a wife.

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.116

Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (R.A)

The Prophet (S.A.W) said, "Everyone of you is a guardian and everyone of you is responsible (for those under your ward). A ruler is a guardian and is responsible (for his subjects); a man is a guardian of his family and responsible (for them); a wife is a guardian of her husband's house and she is responsible (for it), a slave is a guardian of his master's property and is responsible (for that). Beware! All of you are guardians and are responsible (for those under your wards)."
