Assalaamu 'alaykum

I became a Muslim aged 18 years, and my best friend's father took very good care of me. He treated me like his own daughter, arranged my marriage, and has played a grandfather figure to my children - he treated my children just like his own grandchildren.

Sadly, he passed away very recently and has left me a gift in his will. I am praying for him and would like to know if I read Qur'an or give sadaqah on his behalf would that be counted as sadaqah jaariyah or is this only restricted to his blood children?

Walikum Assalam,

First of all I want to congratulate you for reverting to Islam. If your best friend's father died as a disbeliever then I am sorry you can not pray for him or give any charity as it will not benefit his soul. And Allah (S.W.T) has paid back for his goodness in this World. But if your best friend's uncle was a Muslim then surely you can pray for him ,you can also give charity on this behalf and you can read Holy Qur'an for his soul.

Jaza kallahu khairun for answering. Yes, he was a Muslim - a wonderful helper and supporter, may Allah bless his soul, ameen.
