My beloved believers,I know that Iblees was cursed in the Qur'an for not bowing down to our father Adam AS, my qusetion is why? Allah had ordered all the angels to bow down, but Iblees is not a angel,so why is he cursed for not doing something that he was not ordered to do?

It was not him disobeying and not bowing that he became cursed, because Adam too disobeyed Allah but he did not become a disbeliever rather he repented to Allah and Allah accepted, but what made Shaytaan cursed was that he attributed to Allah mistake, and Allah does not make a mistake. This is a very important part of Aqeedah, and should be clear.

No Iblees was never an angel, ever, rather he was/is a jinn. See Surat Al Kahf Ayah 50

QUOTED :Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. THIS MEANS IBLEES WAS ANGEL. !! (may Allah forgive me If I am wrong.)

I will ask about this with my Mufti Naushad Sir also...

(Apr 26 '13 at 12:38) Irfan Alam ♦ Irfan%20Alam's gravatar image

@Irfan Alam The Ayah is clear, it says "nd [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord." what you me3ntioned was taken out of context, furthermore there is no need to ask a Mufti just read the full verse here: http://quran.com/18/50 furthermore the jinn were among the angels, and the order to the angels included the jinn, and Allah knows best, and I seek forgiveness for any mistake.

Also he was created from fire. We know angels are created from light and jinn from fire.

(Apr 26 '13 at 16:36) sadie ♦ sadie's gravatar image

My Mufti Sir confirmed that, Iblees was/is Jinn. It is confirmed from Para 15, Surah Kahaf.

@Mr khaled That is not why, Adam too did not obey Allah, that is why we are currently not in Jannah, but that disobedience didn't make him a disbeliever or cursed like Shaytaan right away. And the same is with shaytaan, it wasn't his disobedience that made him him, but rather when Allah gave him a chance to fix himself/reconsider, he showed arrogance and through his words basically attributed mistake to Allah.

@yaqin

you are right when you say that iblees was a Jin. But he was also ordered to prostrate before Adam a.s

Holy Qur'an says,

And We have certainly created you, [O Mankind], and given you [human] form. Then We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was not of those who prostrated. [ Allah ] said, "What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?" [Satan] said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay." [Holy Qur'an 7:11-12]

the above verse shows that the iblees was also commanded to prostrate before Adam (a.s).

And also showed pride and arrogance so as he shaytan did not bow down , he felt he was better than Adam as.

Holy Qur'an says,

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. {Holy Qur'an 18:50]

Holy Qur'an states itself that iblees was a Jinn.

My Mufti Sir confirmed that, Iblees was/is Jinn. It is confirmed from Para 15, Surah Kahaf.

I know this take is from interpretations and translation of Qur'an but:

What if Iblees was an angel, and though Angels were created without free-will, they were given a moment, or short time frame to have the choice to obey Allah and prostrate to Adam, showing obeisance, or not obey?

Does the word "of" really mean or give the connotation that something or someone is "one of" something or a people?

If an individual is of a group, does that mean he is one of them?

Are there not some who believe that Iblees was a jinn that attained the right to be an angel?

I did not mean to erase your message I am on my touch screen phone please forgive me. And yes but on the other hand does it really matter if he was angel or jinn. ? Allah subhana WA ta'ala knew before he created anything what would happen .

(Apr 27 '13 at 00:32) sadie ♦ sadie's gravatar image

Also angels were created from light. And jinn from fire.

(Apr 27 '13 at 00:33) sadie ♦ sadie's gravatar image

And as brother Irfan stated its also in Qur'an sues kahaf

My beloved believers, my reason for asking this question was because it was posed to me by one that has left the folds of Islam, this one used this question as proof that either the Qur'an is wrong or Allah azza wal jall is not just, though either is not the truth.Since this question has been asked to me I have posed it to many muslims and some of the feedback I got was frightening. You may see from some of the answer on this forum why I'am scared. In my humble opinion the Believer has answered this question correct, inshallah, I will like to build on the foundation he has laid. FIRST MATTER: Shaykh Al Jabiree has stated, Knowledge is of two kinds, which is Ilm As-Shari, that is the knowldege which is contained in the book of Allah and the sunnah of the Rasul sws and also in the seerah (biographies)of the pious companions. "Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind,Enjoining what is right, Forbidding what is wrong, and believeing in Allah." (sura 3:110 inpart) SECOND MATTER: Guidance is of two kinds:

A. Guidance of Taufiq, which is totally from Allah, this is when Allah opens the heart to recieve the truth.

B. Guidance of Irshad, which is through the preaching of Allah's Rasul's AS,and the pious companions that adhere to La Illa ha Illa lah. " And who is more astray then the one who follows his HAWA (desires) without guidance from Allah." (sura 28:50)

My beloved believers, this is where we derive beneficial knowledge from, now lets deal with the question at hand. First and foremost,as the believer has pointed out and the brother Irfan came to relaize that Iblis was never a angel, and in the tafsir by Ibn Kathir on the ayats mentioned in some of the answers, such as,"I am better than him," Ibn Jarir says about this statement: "This excuse is worst then the multiple crimes committed by Iblees, which are arrogance, jealousy, and rebellion." This statement made Iblees the first rascist, for he was upon "ASABIYYAH" and this is why Asabiyyah is forbiden in Islam. Now for the danger of using our own opinion when it comes to Islam, for this is what Iblees used when he made the statement mentioned above. Ibn Sirin said: " The first to use Qiyas (analogy comparative) was Iblees, and would the sun and moon be worshipped if it was not for qiyas? Now for the command given to Iblees, for one brother has stated that there were jins amongst the angels, this is something I never heard of and according to Ibn Abbas in the same tafsir book he states,"The command that was given to only the angels fell on Iblees also because he was amongst the angels immetating them." This is why he was cursed for not obeying the command of Allah as the believer pointed out in his answer. Now to answer the brother Jook, according to Qatadah,"The angels did not ask this question out of being disobidient they asked this question, for the sake of learning about the wisdom of the decesion."Asking this question does not constitute free will at any time. ALLAH KNOWS BEST!
