Sometime ago I was reading the works of a shaykh, who's name I will not mention, and he said in his book that the sunnah can abrogate the Qur'an, do anyone have any proof of this?

123 whoever you are it seems that your knowledge is not that vast. I didn't say it did for I know it doesn't but there are some that makes this claim if you read the debate you would have see what shaykh said this and what book. So for you to say it is a sick question only tells me you are bent on mischief. I welcome any debate with the likes of you on any subject I presented or answered on. People must beware of people like you...

Sunnah never goes against Qur'an. So the answer is NO

Brother you should provide reference of that Shaykh so it will be easier for us to give you the correct answer. As we have to read the context also.

Brother believer, in volume two of Al-Aqidah Al Wasitiyyah translated by uthameen, ibn Taymiyah made this claim on pages 12 and 13, may Allah have Mrecy on him. now I have done my homework and came to know that there is two opinions about this,so I await you response, but I agree with you.

The Sunnah does not go against the Quran, but comes with it, they are inseparable. As a scholar has said The sunnah explains the Quran, but the Quran does not explain the Sunnah, for there is no need to. The Quran is in need for the sunnah, because the Sunnah also a form of Wahi is there to explain the Quran , and this is clear in verse 44 of Surat Annahl. Furthermore I would like to point out that the Quran and the Authentic sunnah never contradict, the only contradiction is the understanding of people of them. That is why it is important to understand the Quran and Sunnah the way the sahabah understood it, for the Prophet said they were the best of generations, and then the ones after them and the ones after them.

@Al Ummat Shaykh Ul Islam, did not say that the sunnah contradicts the Qur"an,he said that it abrogates it and this means: "TO ABOLISH, DO AWAY WITH, OR ANNUL, ESPECIALLY BY AUTHORITY," SO THIS MEANS THAT HE IS SAYING THAT THE SUNNAH CAN ABOLISH THE QUR'AN BY AUTHORITY! NOW I MUST ASK YOU DID ANY OF THE SAHABAH, THE TABI'OON OR THE AT TABI'OON, UNDERSTAND THE SUNNAH THIS WAY? IF SO THEN SHOW ME THE WRITINGS OF ANY OF THE SALAF WHICH AGREES WITH THIS STATEMENT. I WILL GIVE YOU HIS SATATEMENT, SHAYKH UL ISLAM PROOFS FOR HIS STATEMENT: "ALLAH HAS SENT DOWN TO YOU THE BOOK AND AL HIKMAH (THE SUNNAH)." (SURA 4:113) "AND THE PROPHET SWS ALSO SAID,"I SHOULD NOT FIND ANYONE OF YOU RECLINING ON HIS COUCH,WHILE ONE OF MY ODERS COME TO HIM,SAYING: " WE DONOT KNOW OF THIS! WHATEVER WE FIND IN THE BOOK OF ALLAH, WE FOLLOW IT! BEHOLD I WAS GIVEN THE BOOK AND IT'S LIKE ALONG WITH IT." THE SHAYKH THEN STATES," THAT IS WHY THE CORRECT POSITION IS THAT THE QUR'AN CAN BE ABROGATED (ABOLISHED, DONE AWAY WITH, ANNUL, BY AUTHORITY) BY THE SUNNAH ONCE IT IS AUTHENTICATED FROM THE RASUL SWS AND THAT IS POSSIBLE, BOTH ACCORDING TO THE INTELLECT, AND THE LEGISLATION."

I AWAIT YOUR REPLY!

My brother, I have the book in my hand,it is translated by shaykh uthameen this statement begins at the end of page 12 and ends on page thirteen, and this is in volume two for it is two volumes to this book. You do know that other shaykhs have wrote on this work so you cant have the one Im speaking about for it is there Im looking at it now,but for the record I will give you the two opinions on this topic.Again it is Al-Aqidah Al Wasitiyyah volume 2 commentary by shaykh Utameen, and may Allah forgive you for your insinuation that Im lieing.Salam

(May 02 '13 at 15:27) yaqin ♦ yaqin's gravatar image

@yaqin firstly, brother I never said you were lying, I simply stated what I found. secondly the book I linked to was Volume two of the Sharh/explanation/commentary of Sheikh Al Uthaymeen (in Arabic) to Al Aqida Al Waasitiyah. And the pages I was reading from the Arabic text, was 9 and on wards, and then it starts in to a new section, so what I have read I didn't see anything claiming such. But I looked again, and I saw that before the end (start of a new chapter) on page 9, it says before it "إذا السنة مقامها مع القران...) meaning "The place of the sunnah is with the Quran". Perhaps

I am not reading in the correct place, but I am reading in the correct book and volume by Sheikh Al Uthaymeen. Perhaps you can provide me with an online copy of what you are reading so that I can read the section you are talking about, and perhaps I can explain better.

MY BROTHER I PRAY THAT I HAVE NOT OFFENDED YOU,THAT IS NOT MY INTENTIONS,THE BOOK I AM READING FROM HAS BEEN TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH I SUPPOSE THAT IS WHY WE ARE READING IN TWO DIFFERENT PLACES AGAIN I DO APOLOGIZE IF I OFFENDED YOU IN ANYWAY.

@yaqin do not worry you have not offended me. to tell the truth, I was kind of worried that I offended you, I apologize for the misunderstanding.
