The Ahmadiyya Community regard their founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (b.1835 - d 1908) to be the ‘Promised One’ of every religion – including Buddhism; Zoroastrianism; Hinduism; and the various religions of the Native Americans – and not merely of those that trace their origins to Abraham.

The Old and New Testament verses quoted by the Ahmadis in support of their claim are to be found in the Book of Daniel (chapter 12); in the Gospel of Matthew (chapter 24); and in the Book of Revelation. All these reference are linked to the Promised Messiah of the End Times.

The 12th chapter of Daniel contains the words: ‘From the moment that the perpetual sacrifice is abolished and the appalling abomination: a thousand two hundred and ninety days (Daniel 12:11) – Jerusalem Bible.

Ahmadis argue that the ‘abolition of the perpetual sacrifice' refers to the replacement of Judaic Law by that of Islamic (Sharia); and that the abolition of the ‘appalling abomination’ refers to Islam’s prohibition of idol worship. Christian scholars state that the ‘abomination’ (as mentioned again in Matthew 24) probably refers to the statue of Zeus set up in Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes in 167BC.

It is worth noting that Daniel gives three periods during which the abolition of both the perpetual sacrifice and the appalling abomination is to take place:

1150 days (8:13-14)

1290 days (12.11)

1335 days (12.12)

The Ahmadis have decided to select Daniel 12.11. They claim that the period of 1,290 days is actually 1,290 years; and that the 1,290th year of that period is the 1,290th year of the Hijri calendar; and that this year corresponds to the year (1875) when Ghulam Ahmad is said to have received his first divine revelation.

In other words, the (worldwide; and it would have to be worldwide) replacement of Judaic Law by Sharia; and the abolition idol worship, was all done and dusted by the year 1875, when Ghulam Ahmad (the ‘Promised One’) was forty years of age.

I am not a Muslim. It is not for me to state who is right and who is wrong here. But ask yourself: Is there now – today – no Judaic Law? Is there now – today – no more worship of idols?

Ahmadis cite numerous passages from the Qur'an, works of exegesis and hadith in support of their views. Rather than trawl through these I suggest you consider the following hadith. They describe the End Times, when the ‘Promised One’ is present on earth. They are all recognised to be authentic hadith, beyond reproach:

There will be an age of unprecedented abundance.

‘Then the land will be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, there will grow (such big) pomegranate that a group of people (between 10 and 40 people) will be able to eat it and seek shelter under its skin. Milk cows will give so much milk that a whole party will be able to drink. And the milk given by camels will be such (a large quantity) that the whole tribe will be able to drink of it. And the sheep will give so much milk that the whole family will be able to drink of that…’ (Sahih Muslim)

‘Even without the plough, the produce of wheat would multiply seven hundred times, one mudd (a measure of wheat) becoming 700 mudd’. (Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti)

‘In the End Times there will be a khalifa who will distribute wealth without even counting it’. (Sahih Muslim)

‘The reason for Jesus (pbuh) to abandon charity is: There are no needy poor people in want of charity left’. (Sunan Ibn Majah, vol. 10, p. 339)

‘Earth will turn like the silver tray, growing vegetation as it did in the time of Adam (peace be upon him) so much so that a group of people will eat a bunch of grapes and it will satiate them; a group of people will eat a single pomegranate and it will satiate them; the bull will be sold for a lot of money and a horse will cost only a few dirham……’ (Sunan Ibn Majah)

It is not for me to comment on these words. But ask yourself: Do we live in an age of unprecedented abundance; or is this an age to come?

There will be an end to poverty.

‘... And wealth will be so abundant that no one will accept it’. (Sahih Bukhari)

‘The Hour will not be established until wealth will be in abundance - so abundant that a wealthy person will worry lest nobody accept his Zakat, and whenever he will present it to someone, that person will say, "I am not in need of it."’ (Sahih Bukhari)

‘Then will my Ummah be blessed, the number of animals will increase, and the land will bear its fruits’. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar)

‘Definitely possessions will be in abundance then, flowing like water. Yet no one will (condescend) to take any’. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah al-Qurtubi, p. 464.)

It is not for me to comment on these words. But ask yourself: Do we live in an age where there is no poverty; or is this an age to come?

There will be peace throughout the whole world.

‘Like the cup fills with water, so will Earth fill with peace. There will be no enmity left between any people. All hostility, fighting, and envy will disappear’. (Sahih Muslim)

‘The warriors will abandon their weight (weapons and kits)’. (Sunan Ibn Majah, vol. 10, p. 334)

‘Spite, mutual hatred, and jealousy against one another will certainly disappear’. (Sunan Abu Dawud)

It is not for me to comment on these words. But ask yourself: Do we live in an age of universal peace, free from war and strife; or is this an age to come?

The Messiah will not introduce a new religion.

He will lead as you for 40 years according to the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of your Apostle, and then die’. (Sahih Muslim)

Jesus (pbuh) will not come to the people of Mohammed as a Prophet, but to practice the religion of Mohammed…’ (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar, `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 68)

‘No Prophet shall come during the period between me (Mohammed) and Jesus (pbuh). And Jesus (pbuh) shall descend. Recognise him when you see him: A man of medium height and of a ruddy, fair complexion. He will be dressed in two pieces of a yellow garment. The hair of his head will appear as if water is trickling out of it, although his hair will not be wet. He will struggle for the cause of Islam... And Jesus (pbuh) will make the Antichrist (Dajjal) ineffective. He will live on this Earth for a period of 40 years and, at the end of this period, will pass away. The Muslims will offer the funeral prayers of Jesus (pbuh)’. (Ibn Ahmad Hanbal, Musnad)

‘Then he will live for 40 years. No one will die during his time. People will say (go and graze) to their sheep and animals, and they will go. Even though they will pass through crops, they will not feed off one ear of grain. Snakes and scorpions will not harm anyone, and predators will stand by the doors and not hurt people...’ (Jalal ad-Din as-Suyuti)

It is not for me to comment on these words. But ask yourself: Whose name is mention here? Is it Jesus or is it Mirza Ghulam Ahmad? Did Ghulam Ahmad live for 40 years or was it 73? And is it true that no one died while Ahmad walked the earth?

The Promised One will be buried next to the Prophet’s (May God bless him and grant him peace) tomb.

He (Jesus) will be buried with me (Mohammed) in my grave. Then I and Jesus, son of Mary, will stand up in one grave between Abu Bakr and `Umar’. (Mishkat-ul-Masabih, 40:4)

It is not for me to comment on these words. But ask yourself: Was Mirza Ghulam Ahmad buried in the Prophet’s grave? Or do these words speak of an event yet come?
