Many years ago I read a story about a guy who, every morning, went to the same newspaper shop to buy his daily paper. Every day, without fail, the shopkeeper was extremely rude to this guy; and every day this guy responded with a smile and a kind word.
One morning, after so many months, the shopkeeper said: ‘I don’t understand. Every day I’m rude to you, and every day you respond with kindness. Why is this?’
‘Ah,’ said the guy. ‘I treat you with kindness because that’s the way I am. And I’m not going to let you decide how I’m going to behave!’
Of course it’s hard. It takes courage to respond with kindness when all you want to do is punch someone on the nose, especially when they deserve it!
It is the Lord of Mercy who asks us to fight against our very selves: to be better people than the world, and our enemies, would have us be. Impossible that He would ask such a fight of us, and not provide the means by which we can win.
