I was curious if according to Islam, is abortion permissible. I have a relative who had 2 children, and upon her third pregnancy, became severely ill. She could not keep down any food or liquids, becoming very weak, and began losing weight rapidly. The doctors concluded that the fetus was draining nutrients from her at a potentially fatal rate. An emergency D&C was performed, ending the pregnany. A few years later she became pregnant again, and the pregnancy was progressing normally. During the second trimester, the symptoms of the previous pregnancy began. That pregnancy was terminated as well. My question is under Islamic law, is abortion still viewed as a sin if the mother's life is at stake? What about in the caes of a sexual assault, or if the fetus has a serious disability? Especially in the case of a pregnancy as a result of rape, which could cause additional severe trauma to the victim if made to carry the fetus to term.

Thank you! Is there anywhere where I can find rulings on when the mother's life is at risk?
