Asalamu- Alikom,

I have broken the vow several times (may be 3 or 4 times) , I put my hand on holy Quran that I will not do (For example; lying....etc) anymore but I did, I know the Kefara (Punishment of breaking vow according Islamic Shariah)

My question is that: Can I chose the 4th option (Fasting for 3 days for each time breaking the vow which is total 3X4 = 12 days fasting), Is it acceptable for Almighty Allah (SWT) allthough:

  1. I can afford to feed ten indigent persons on a scale of the average for the food of my families. for each time I broke the vow( 10X4=40 persons)

  2. I can afford to give cloth to ten indigent person avergate closth of my family or my own. for each time I broke the vow( 10X4=40 persons)

  3. Giving freedom to slave: not applicable in todays world.

  4. Fasting (Roza): Fast for 3 days.

But I chose the 4th option (Fasting for 3 days), Is it acceptable for Almighty Allah (SWT)

Salaam brother,

It is not acceptable for you to offer 3 days fasting for each broken vow if you can do the first two on the list. Granted, today, freeing of slaves does not apply to most of us. Have a look at the site below.

You must also be made aware on the rulings of vows and you can reference this information at the Islamic Questions and Answers site.

Fulfilling legitimate (shar’i) vows is obligatory according to sharee’ah.

Allah SWT says: “Then let them complete the prescribed duties (manaasik of Hajj) for them, and perform their vows…” (al-Hajj 22:29).

This means that they have to do this.

Numerous ahaadeeth have been reported from the Prophet saws discouraging vows and describing them as makrooh.

Abu Hurayrah said:

“The Messenger of Allah SWT (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

‘Do not make vows, for vows do not change qadar (the divine decree) in the slightest, but they make the stingy person give something up.’ (Reported by Muslim).

Those who fulfil their legitimate (shar’i) vows are praised.

Those who make other types of vows are discouraged.

This is because the kind of vow that is praised is the vow to do acts of worship that are not connected to anything – i.e., not conditional upon anything.

And it is best to abstain from making any other vows as one cannot guarantee that one can carry them through. Also making vows does not change qadaa’ (the divine decree).
