The time for the ‘fajr’ prayer starts at the break of dawn and ends when the sun begins to rise.

Thus if one has offered their obligatory ‘fard’ or ‘sunnah’ fajr prayer after the sun has risen it would definitely be qaza.

If by unexpected circumstances a person misses Fajr Salah, then up until the time of Zawal (when the sun is at the highest point in the day) of that day, he should read the two Sunnahs and the two Fards Rakats.

After Zawal, he will only perform the two Fard of Fajr.

If there is only enough time to read the two Fard of Fajr Salaat and not enough time to perform the Sunnah Salaat, then one should perform the Fard and later, after sunrise, make the two rakaats Sunnah with the intention of Nafl (as there is no Qaza for only Sunnah).

It is strictly forbidden to perform the Sunnah rakaats after the Fard rakaats BEFORE sunrise.

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) is reported to have said: "Whoever did not perform the Sunnah of Fajr should perform it after the sun rises". [Tirmidhi, Hadith no. 423]

It is most important to pray the Fajr prayers on time.

In one Hadith,Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has stated:-

‘The two most difficult Salaats for the Munaafiqs (hypocrites) are the Fajr and the Isha Salaats. If they knew the virtue and goodness of these two Salaats, they would have attended it even if they had to crawl.’(Bukhari).

Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) has also said :

‘The person who performs the Fajr Salaat with Jamaat (congregation), is under the protection and mercy of Allah Ta'aala .’ (Ibn-e-Majah). Salaam
