Dear brother / sister,

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says:

' When ye are greeted with a greeting, greet ye with a better than it or return it. Lo! Allah taketh count of all things.' Surah 4:86

And the Prophet said:

:Narrated Anas bin Malik:, "If the people of the Scripture greet you, then you should say (in reply), 'Wa'alaikum (And on you).' " Saheeh Bukhari Vol. 8, Book 74 Number 275

The reason for replying with 'Same to you' is explained in the following:

Saheeh Bukhari

:Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:Allah's Apostle said, "When the Jews greet you, they usually say, 'As-Samu 'alaikum (Death be on you),' so you should say (in reply to them), 'Wa'alaikum (And on you)." Saheeh Bukhari Volume 8, Book 74, Number 274

There are a number of hadiths as in the following example where our Prophet instructs us to greet all people, and that we do not wait for them to greet us first.

:Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:A man asked the Prophet, "What Islamic traits are the best?" The Prophet said, "Feed the people, and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know." Sahih Bukhari Volume 8, Book 74, Number 253k

Late on, the Prophet changed his instructions to not greeting the Christians and the Jews first due to the Jews' greeting us with'Death be upon you'.

The Prophet most likely gave the commands to greet everybody at first and then when the problem of Jews coming along saying ‘death upon you’, the Prophet reversed his judgment.

:Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it. Book 26, Number 5389 Sahih Muslim
