Glory Be To Allah.

It is NOT mandatory to become a scholar, but it is mandatory to get as much knowledge as you can, by looking at your circumstances. If you have a lot of work, learn one step at a time. If you have a lot of time, spend that on Islam and knowledge, for you will be questioned in the Hereafter for what you've done in your life, especially in your free-time.

Assalaamou alaikoum, exactly as sister Anakata told you.

it is a must/mandatory on every muslim to know how to worship Allah as Allah willed. and the worship means; 1.thought/faith/belief 2. Do/order 3. do not do/forbidden. so to know and believe that there is no deity except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah even by imitating is okay as long as believe in it is rsting in the heart. Then it is a must to know the five prayers and its time and its numbers of rak3a and how to perform it and how/when to do woudou and how/when to do ghusl... and then before the coming of Ramddan he should know how to do fasting in the month of Ramaddan(stop drink,eat and intercourse) and if he have money he should know how to pay zakat depend on his business/case before that the 7awl/one year pass and before the coming of the month of Hijj and if he/she intend to do it.

Then for what is forbidden depend on his life style he should know what is haram/unlawful for example eating pork and drinking alcohol...etcetera

This is a must for every muslim that depend on his lifestyle to know what is fard/must like the five pillars of Islam and what is haram/unlawful.. and regarding belief/faith it is enough for him to imitate other.. just by believing that "la ilaha illa Allah Muhammadan Rasouloullah" is enough if he died like this he is in Jannah. and the belief its location is the heart. while it is the heart who command the body to take actions like "what we should do" and "what we should not do".. and that is a fard/must 3ein on every muslim to know the knowedlge that is useful for his case/life.

but it is not a must on every muslim to know all the knowledge or become a scholar(knowing every details in the religion).. it is enough for him the part which is useful for his case/life/affair.

for more details about this subject please read the chapter of knowledge (section I) in the great book of Ihyaa Ulum el Deen (by Imam Abi Hamid el Ghazali) (450-505 AH/1058-1111 AD) may Allah benefit us with his knowledge and may Allah pleases and be pleased with him, in the following link;

aww,

no, it isnt compulsory.

quran - 9:122 - there should be a group of you who study the religion (of islam) so that they can warn their people (who did not study the relgion).

in this verse, Allah commands a group to learn the deen, and does not command everyone.
