being muslim I am proud of dropping a few kilos but seriously wonder being overweight might be a good thing especially if you are kept challenged and busy by the office routine and the other thing should we accept the stupid idea that a thin and fab is best

Salaam sister, Mash'allah that you are improving your physical health by losing unwanted kilos. In another reply to a question somewhat different to yours, I made mention as a way of illustrating a point, the effects of overeating. Basically, I discussed the connection between our desires and food and how lack of self-regulation can run out of control so that we create all sorts of problems for ourselves. Here is what I said:

What happens when we completely submit to our desires is that we run into trouble. We run into trouble on many levels. Food is enticing and enjoyable BUT what happens if we overeat? We become unhealthy, overweight, sluggish and it begins to affect our lives negatively on many levels.

We have to be wise in what foods we choose to eat and how much we eat. We have to self-regulate. If we don’t, we are failing our own selves and Allah subhanahu Wa ta’ala who has entrusted us to take good care of ourselves including our bodies.

And Allah subhanahu Wa ta’ala says:"Eat of the good things which We have provided for you." (2:173)"Eat of what is lawful and wholesome on the earth."(2:168)

Over indulgence and wasting of food are further dissuaded in the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah:‘ No human being has ever filled a container worse than his own stomach. The son of Adam needs no more than a few morsels of food to keep up his strength, doing so he should consider that a third of his stomach is for food, a third for drink and a third for breathing’

Your justification of overweight being good due to busy office duties unfortunately does not stand an argument. On the contrary, the fact tnat you are stuck in an office is even more reason to make a conscious effort to keep the weight down....and exercise levels up.

As to your negative reference to the idea that 'thin and fab are best' let me say this much: thin is healthier for all the medical reasons and there is enough proof about this from doctors, but it is not for the reason of being 'fab' as it is promoted by the non-Islamic cultures. In Islam, the slim body is for your husband. Of course, being slim is also for oneself. Jazakallah

the prophet (Saw) has said المؤمن القوي افضل من المؤمن الضعيف - a strong Muslim is better than a weak one. thus, being too fat is bad as it will make you unhealthy, and you wont be able to fast as well as you could, nor will you be able to pray for as long as you could (as you will be fat and unhealthy).

At the same time, being too thin is bad too, as it leads to health problems. Thus, maintain your fitness, remain healthy and try to maintain a good healthy lifestyle.
