2:256 says there is no compulsion in religion. yet the 84th book of bukhari, dealing with apostates, has several hadiths where people (men) are killed for not wanting to be muslims anymore. and one hadith is about abu bakr saying he will go to war with anyone who doesn't remain a muslim after muhammad's death.

Allah said in the Quran, {There is no compulsion in religion}; [2:256]. This is the explanation on this Ayah found in my book, Holy Wars…Crusades…Jihad, “Ibn Kathir said, ‘This Ayah means, ‘Do not force anyone to embrace the religion of Islam, because Islam is clear, plain and its evidences and proofs are indisputable. Therefore, it is not necessary that anyone be forced to embrace it. Rather, those whom Allah guides, opens their hearts and enlightens their minds towards Islam, will embrace it with knowledge.

Those whom Allah prevents their hearts and seals their hearing and sight from accepting Islam, will not benefit from being forced to embrace it’; Tafsir ibn Kathir, Vol. 1, Pg., 416.’” Thus, this Ayah is about those who are not Muslim: Muslims are not allowed to force those who are not Muslim –to begin with- to embrace Islam. What does this have to do at all with the punishment of those who are Muslim but commit the crime of abandoning Islam, thus, becoming non-Muslim after they had been Muslim? The opinion mentioned in the question is amazing: it indicates the type of ‘knowledge’ that prevails among many Muslims these days. It seems that the reason behind using this sick logic to invalidate Islamic Law, is to suit modern-day disbelievers, who will stop at nothing less than the complete corruption of Islam, {never will the Jews or the Christians be pleased with you until you follow their religion. Say: “Verily, the Guidance of Allâh (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Qur’an [and surely, the Sunnah, the practical Bayan (explanation) of the Quran]), then you would have against Allâh neither any Walî (protector or guardian) nor any helper}; [2:120].

These are two completely different topics: forcing non-Muslims to embrace Islam vs. the punishment, carried out by the Islamic State, of those who were Muslim but committed the crime of abandoning Islam. If we follow this silly reasoning, then what about the remainder of the Hadeeth that legislates this law, as al-Bukhari and Muslims reported it from Allah’s Prophet, who said, “The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am His Messenger, cannot be shed except in three cases: In Qisas (Law of Equity) for murder; a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse; and the one who reverts from Islam (apostate) and leaves the Muslims.”

Should we also abandon the punishment for the adulterer, since ‘there is no compulsion in religion’? Should we also abandon other parts of the Islamic Penal code if the offense does not really harm others, such as abandoning Prayer, drinking, cursing the Prophet, salla-llahu `alaihi wa-sallam, etc., since ‘there is no compulsion in religion’? Who has any right to contradict the Prophet of Allah, salla-llahu àlaihi wa-sallam, who says, "He who reverts from his religion, then kill him"; [as- Silsilah as-Sahihah 487]? And those who contradict him, had they been alive during his time, salla-llahu àlaihi wa-sallam, would they have corrected the Prophet, who received the Quran, by reminding him that in Islam, which he brought from Allah, ‘there is no compulsion in religion’?

Muslims should be strong and stand behind every part of their Law, if they seek Allah’s Help and Support.

thank you for your answer bibi. you are inline with the four major schools, although i think one doesn't kill women for some reason. you don't buy this westernized fiqh that tries to convice muslims not to kill an apostate if he doesn't "fight" the ummah. no major vs minor appostate? these muslims who say that if the koran didn't mention a death penalty, they are on misguidance? down the lizard hole again.

is there an age limit? if a 16year-old leaves islam you would kill her when? the islamqa guy says you have three days to repent. if not off with the head, right? or is it stoning?

speaking of the islamqa.com guy. you should go there and search "was islam spread by the sword". i think he disagrees with the above guy's take on just letting the "clear, plan evidences" stand on their own. he thinks it's the muslims duty to strike fear into the kufar to bring them to islam. and he has "proofs" to that effect.

and your hadith on the three death penalties also answered my other question.

@mike, The truth will always prevail and stand out clear. Why do you suppose all non believers fear Islam, because they subconsciously know the truth and will always want to defy it. They search to discredit and ascertain nonsense in its place. This is the way of shatan and his deceiving ways to lead man astray. Ask your self this, when you see a devout Muslim, how do you feel?

@abyadgirl, i don't feel anything when i look at a muslim. not sure how i would no if they are devout or not? i was at a mosque the friday after thanksgiving, whole bunch of guys praying. the women were behind a wall, made me laugh. "all non believers fear islam", where do lyou get that from? here in america there have been many stories of churches allowing msulim to pray in their spaces. did you not see the story i posted of the christian school who leased two floors to the muslims?

as for apostate, you like the madhabs, maybe you can read the hanafi schools take. the persian jurist sakari

(that's misspelled i'm sure) but you are good at google, you can figure it out.

you speak of non-sense while supporting killing someone if they leave a religion. ok, that one is good for another laugh. so can you give me any details of this "divine" law from the god of mercy? is there an age limit, time limit?

if you want to know why some people fear islam, look to witchita yesterday. or syria or iraq or saudi arabia or iran or afghanistan. riots in bangladesh yesterday.
