Asalaam o alaikum, lets get one thing clear first. This is an honorary title, which bears honorable requisites in society, as part of the "Royal" lineage of our Prophet, saw. With it comes in most cases the family tree, of recognition, proof. Also ,,most members of the family to present day are of esteemed persons, high ranking scholars, and some of "secret knowledge." Now if you were a real ancestor of Muhammad, saw, you would have no doubts, and be of an elite with special privileges. Most of Muhammads saw, descendants live in Russia and Turkey, and possibly Morocco.

Now, there are alot of people, families that just adopt the name, sayeed, syid, sayed, to make themselves more special. This was done especially in Turkey, until the Government cracked down and investigated such claims. This because the true lineage are exempt from taxes, ect, and are looked after with pensions, revenue etc.

India and Iran are no exceptions in claiming the name or title. But any true title will more often bare a family tree, and will more than likely to know of their past and historical genes even by word of mouth. This is prevalent among the shia and sufis, to try and lay claim to some sort of special treatment. Allah knows best.

Regarding parental lineage, some say from the fathers side, others say from the mothers side. ??? Again Allah knows best.

I read some more on this subject, and yes, sayaad from the mothers side, and Amir from the fathers side. Thus the claim ifs from both parentages.
