Salaam Alaiykum. For a believer who sincerely believes in Allah and His Messenger saws, and truly fears the Last Day, one reason is sufficient to justify why men can’t wear silk clothing; and that reason is because the Messenger of Allah saws commanded clearly. And who disobeys the Messenger disobeys Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala. Its prohibition has been reported in several narrations of the Messenger of Allah Subhaa wa Ta'ala: The Prophet saws said, 'Gold, silver, silk and Dibaj (*a kind of silk) are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you (Muslims) in the hereafter.'

*this material could have been satin as it looks very much like silk

The Prophet saws said, "Do not drink in gold or silver utensils, and do not wear clothes of silk or Dibaj, for these things are for them (unbelievers) in this world and for you in the Hereafter.

"The Prophet saws said: Wearing silk and gold has been made unlawful for the males of my Ummah and lawful for their females. The Prophet saws took silk and held it in his right hand, and took gold and held it in his left hand and said: “both of these are prohibited to the males of my community.”

The Prophet saws did not specifically mention the reasons why gold and its ornaments are prohibited for the males of the Islamic community, but many eminent scholars in Islam have given several opinions in their search for the wisdom and ‘hikmah’ behind this prohibition.

They have stated that it could be because of the segregation of sexes in Islam (males do not wear what is especially a highly enhancing, feminine adorement for the female); it could be because gold and silk were (and are) considered the epitome of luxury in this world, and by displaying them openly would lead to arrogance and flamboyance; or simply, because Allah specifically mentions in the Holy Quran that the believers will be adorned with gold and silk in Paradise, and thus he, saws wanted the believers to always prefer the life of the hereafter to the life of luxury of this world.

In relation to wearing silk for medical reasons, I myself am not aware of this situation but if for some explicit reason this is the case and no fabric of equal suitability is suggested by the medical practitioners, then Allah knows best and will judge fairly. And Allah knows best. Salaam
