Now updated: Ramadan calendar -

Assalamu Alaikum I feel uncomfortable making salah at home and I try to hide myself from my family when I go to pray. I especially feel uneasy when one of my family members walks into a room where I am praying and sees me. I get distracted and I find it very difficult to recover focus. I have been trying to identify the problem for years but still feel very uncomfortable. I feel relaxed praying by myself or in the masjid but I usually am not able to make it to the masjid. If I can't find a private place to pray at home many times I will delay salah and sometimes skip it. I think maybe I have psychological problems or something but my inability to overcome this issue/fear/anxiety/disobedience is making me feel very worthless and despised by Allah. Please does anyone have any suggestions? JazakumAllah

My dear brother, most urgent for me to first point out is that you can not skip salah!! That is a very big sin - kufr, according to one view among the scholars. Our Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that between a man and shirk/kufr is abandoning salah. So pray your prayers during the fixed times. Do not skip.

We are told in general to pray where there is no distraction. So finding a place like this for prayer is good. But again - do not let that interfere with the prayer itself. You have to pray on time.. (and as a Muslim man, you should strive to go to the mosque to pray in congregation when you can).

In Islam, praying to be "seen" among people (as the hypocrites did) is something really bad and condemnable ... so it is good that this is not your problem. But being ashamed when you are seen praying is also an extreme position. Muslims should love and be proud of their good deeds (that is a sign of iman - faith). So if people see you praying by chance, let them.. just focus on the prayer, not on what is in the background (people, etc). There are scholarly books written on how to develop khushoo during prayer. I will make du'a for you as well.
