السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته –– Optional. It is not compulsory. Our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to pray both in shoes and barefoot. But back then, the masjid floors were bare. Nowadays - the masjids are carpeted. So taking off the shoes to pray is fine. (That avoids spreading dirt, which the Prophet advised against).
