Now updated: Ramadan calendar -

Someone mentioned that there is Hadith whereby the prophet (Peace and blessings upon him) said that it is more preferable to break your fast when fasting Sunnah, than to tell someone you are fasting. Could you please clarify. If this Hadith does exist, can I please have the details of it. Jazakallah Khair

Yes. There are several hadiths emphasizing that breaking fasting is recommended when a brother invites you to eat. As you know, we have two types of fasting; obligatory ad recommended. There is no escape of first, except in some special situations such as in traveling or disease. But there is no problem with breaking the recommended one. Considering this point, in some situations breaking can have a higher reward. Replying the invitation of a believer is one of them while it makes him satisfied. Here are some hadiths in this regard:

Musa b. Jafar (a) said: “Breaking your fasting because of your brother and making him satisfied is better than your fasting and more rewarded than your fasting.” (Al-Mahasin, vol. 2, p. 412)

Ja’far b. Sadiq (a) said: “if someone visits his brother while he is fasting, then he breaks his fasting and does not mention to him that he has been fasting to make him ashamed, he will be given the reward of one year of fasting.” (Al-Mahasin, vol. 2, p. 412)
