Yes, it matters. Because Allah سبحانه و تعالى commanded us to cover up properly, including the head covered. So until you do start wearing it, then it will continue counting as a sin against you. Whatever these reasons.. they are not worth getting bad deeds. So hasten to wear proper hijab, my dear sister.

I was checking about not wearing Hijab as being categorized as a major sin. There is ambiguity, but there is a clear verse stating that you have to:

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. [33:59]

When the Qur'an, the word of Allah, gives a clear instruction, one must adhere to it with totality. And you have no "ifs and buts" as the Qur'an clearly states:

It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed into a plain error.[33:36]

Another side-point to note is in this same chapter, veil and importance of obeying Allah and his Messenger (pbuh) is stressed.

A veil is not to protect the woman but to protect the man as well. When a woman breaks the "hijab level" man will have sexual urge because he is weak:

Allah wishes to lighten (the burden) for you; and man was created weak (cannot be patient to leave sexual intercourse with woman).[4:28]

But we can add a supporting verse to conclude the answer:

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of feminine sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.[24:31]

Forgot to add the characteristics of the clothing:

  1. Not thin in thickness of the cloth.
  2. Should,not emphasize the shape.
  3. Hand and feet should be shown.
  4. Face should be covered except the eyes (there is difference of opinion here about whether the full face can be shown).

Jazakallah Khair
