Well, the title pretty much says it all! First of all, salam'u'alaikum.

I've been married for 2 years and we just became parents. I just wanted to know if it's wrong I haven't gotten my mahr yet?

Assalamu Alaykum,

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to a man, "Marry, even with (a Mahr equal to) an iron ring."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Hadith 80)

  • The entire Mahr can be given at the time of the marriage contract. However, it is also permissible to delay that Mahr or part of the Mahr if both the parties agreed on it.

  • Delayed Mahr (your approval for it) should be either a specified time period or undefined time period.

  • If you agreed on delay Mahr for certain time period. You cannot ask from husband the Mahr unless the husband dies or the husband becomes bankrupt then you can ask for your Mahr.

  • If you agreed on the delayed Mahr for unspecified time period than the Mahr will be paid after the husband dies or when the husband divorces his wife.

  • Mahr can be an equal to or more than the amount of an iron ring.

  • If a Muslim man has not given Mahr to his would be Muslim wife than that marriage is not valid.

  • Please ask your husband, if he will give you a delayed Mahr.

  • If he has no intention of paying you Mahr or delayed Mahr then your marriage to him is invalid.

May Allah,
