Salamun alaekum... Pls, is it permissible for a menstrating woman(muslim) to recite the Holy Quran? And moreso, can she hold the Quran cos when i was in school, i did see my fellow sisters reciting the Quran. They even go to the lenght of sitting at one side of the female position during jumat service. So, all these things baffles me alot.

there is alot to be baffled about in islam. I think the black ninja is partially right. some schools of thought in islam say a menstruating woman can't touch or read from the Koran. but I think you can recite from memory?

put yeah, women are often impure. that is why they can never reach the level of piety as men and therefore are of lesser value and lower stature in society.

You cannot recite the Qur'an from memory. To recite from memory one must be pure and have Ghusl.

Assalamu Alaykum,

Menstruating woman are impure therefore they must wait until their menstruation have finished. They must then perform Ghusl then Wudhu (ablution) then they can recite and touch the Qur'an.

A Muslim woman must be pure (have ghusl and wudhu (ablution)) to touch and read from the Qur'an.

May Allah,

Asalamu'Alay Kum Wa Rahamtullahi Wa Barakatuh, I am Mufti Almas, From Academy Al Sunnah. http://askquestionsonislam.webs.com/, asked me to answer this question for you, : Question : Salamun alaekum.... Pls can menstrating woman recite the noble Quran? Can she even sit in the masjid during Juma't sermon cos I've seen the situation whereby sisters sit at one side of the female position during Juma't sermon, some even go to the extent of reciting the Quran during ramadan claiming that the Holy prophet permit us to do so. Are you a muslim or non-muslim? : [Yes, No]

Salam, let's start by some verses in the holy qur'an describing the menstruations periods, :

"They will ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is harmful, so keep away from women during it. Do not approach them until they are purified of it, when they are purified you may approach them as Allah has ordained." (Qur'an 2:222)

"In the case of those of your wives past the age of menstruation, if you have any doubt, their waiting period should be three months, and that also applies to those who never menstruate. The time for women who are pregnant is when they give birth. Whoever has fear of Allah - He will make matters easy for him." (Qur'an 65:4)

Here are some shah hadith describing it:

Volume 1, Book 6, Number 302 : Narrated by 'Aisha We set out with the Prophet for Hajj and when we reached Sarif I got my menses. When the Prophet came to me, I was weeping. He asked, "Why are you weeping?" I said, "I wish if I had not performed Hajj this year." He asked, "May be that you got your menses?" I replied, "Yes." He then said, "This is the thing which Allah has ordained for all the daughters of Adam. So do what all the pilgrims do except that you do not perform the Tawaf round the Ka'ba till you are clean."

Volume 1, Book 6, Number 303 : Narrated by 'Aisha Fatima bint Abi Hubaish said to Allah's Apostle, "O Allah's Apostle! I do not become clean (from bleeding). Shall I give up my prayers?" Allah's Apostle replied: "No, because it is from a blood vessel and not the menses. So when the real menses begins give up your prayers and when it (the period) has finished wash the blood off your body (take a bath) and offer your prayers."

Volume 1, Book 6, Number 304 : Narrated by Asma' bint Abi Bakr A woman asked Allah's Apostle, "O Allah's Apostle! What should we do, if the blood of menses falls on our clothes?" Allah's Apostle replied, "If the blood of menses falls on the garment of anyone of you, she must take hold of the blood spot, rub it, and wash it with water and then pray in (with it)."

So, bacically all of this is *prohibited:

  • Prohibited to perform salah prayers
  • Prohibited to keep the prescribed fasts in the month of Ramadan
  • Prohibited to hold or touch a copy of the Qur'an
  • Prohibited to recite a single verse of the Qur'an
  • Prohibited to enter a mosque
  • Prohibited to perform the Pilgrimage (Hajj)
  • Prohibited to go to the masjid ( house of allah ) ** You must clean your self my taking a bath, the right way of ghusl will also be published soon, on our site so check a look, and correct. Also, if you have any blood that has been dropped or ejected on clothes, it is fard'h to clean the cloth as mentioned.

Sincerly, Mufit Almas, from Academy AlSunnah, ''if you have any questions regarding islam, please send us your question on: askquestionsonislam.webs.com we will answer with qur'an and sahih hadith''. -Jazakallahu Khayra.*
