In a 2000 Fatwa titled “The Transmitted and Sensory Proofs of the Rotation of the Sun and Stillness of the Earth”, Saudi Arabian Grand Mufti Sheikh Ibn Baaz asserted that the earth was flat and disk-like and that the sun revolved around it. He had insisted that satellite images to the contrary were nothing but a Western conspiracy against the Islamic world.Source: Al-Ahram Weekly Issue 477, 13-19 April, 2000

Why we are so narrow minded???

Sheikh Baz made a mistake. His statements may seem true from the reference point of a human on earth but not so from the reference point in space. It is human to err.

As you may know the Quran does not state such things.

Infact the Quran has verses which hint the earth is geo spherical (egg shaped) and states the sun is also moving (which many people don't know even today!)

Adding salt to an injury, he was blind too. So, I'm not sure how he was able to see the satellite imagery & then conclude it was a Western conspiracy. As you know brother, I'm from Saudi Arabia. What bothers me most is that people in that country have (must) believe & follow this kid of bullshit (fatwas) issued by those so called grand Muftis or religious figures. Take, for example, the current grand Mufti (blind too), wikipedia link. He issued a fatwa that says public gathering in the form of Protest is HARAM; so, protest against unjust ruler, monarch, government are all Haram (see references for more crazy fatwas). Since he is blind, I would love to know how he read books & draw conclusions. His fatwas are used to punish any person who disagrees with the monarch. Also, we as Muslims in Saudi Arabia are forced to follow GRAND MUFTIS NON-SENSE OPINIONS or ... (you know what I mean).

You see brother, as of today, the Muslim world (not just Saudi Arabia) is led by bunch of hypocrites, entitled, uneducated (real education not mosque type), backward, arrogant, power thirsty so called Shikhs and Muftis. They led the Muslim world to its dark ages. Muslim majority countries are often HELPED financially by the GULF counties with a lot of wealth (such Saudi Arabia). In return, those other countries are expected to support the GULF countries politically (cheer the monarch) and give their (Gulf Countries) Shakhs the religious authority on Islamic matters.

Did you know that the monarch pledge to give Egypt $5B after the military overthrew the elected government (Muslim Brotherhood). He did it because: (1) the Muslim Brotherhood came through a democratic process (election) and that DOES NOT politically align well with Absolute Monarchy (One man rule. no political parties, no elections, no constitution, Monarch is the LAW, etc). (2) the Muslim Brotherhood is well established RELIGIOUS party with its OWN religious institution (Shikhs in mosques and religious schools). This means that Egypt would NO longer allow the GULF county's Shikhs to INFLUENCE Egyptians on Islamic matters. So, the Saudi King wanted to remove any democracy at all cost (some Saudi people live under poverty yet $5B is giving to another country's military power) as well as keep the Saudi Shikhs influence.

At the end of the tunnel, there's is a light. Youths like you & I will hopefully be the lights that brings the Muslim world to 21st century (in terms of freedom of thoughts, freedom of association, human rights, science vs religion conflicts, moderate religion ideology, etc).

@username and @umar abdulah, al hamdulilah and may Allah reward you both. Shaykh worship and mufti, scholar etc is the problem with the ummah today. Remember when the ayah came down saying how the christians and jews worship their rabbis and monks and Hatim said that they didnt and the Rasul saws replyed yes they do for they accept what they say over their Rabb well this is what is going on today. I tell anyone that i only accept the quran and the authenticated sunnah from whomever it comes from and i reject everything that goes againstt them and i don't care who says it....

It is the consensus of our scholars that the earth is round. But yeah, totally ignore that fact and find the one odd, outlier view. Very honest of you.. [sarcasm]. This is called confirmation bias. To choose some facts to support you and ignore the abundance of facts which refute you.

By the way - Ibn Baaz had bigger issues than just his view of earth's shape.

i thought it was called "cherry picking". is he also the guy who said you have to allow 10 year-old girls to marry? but isn't that just following the example of the prophet?

@MIKE I'm aware of the veiws you presented and it is through text minipulation which they base there claim, bin bazz made a mistake and that is a well for we all do such. As muslims we must correct his mistake for to do so is a blessing for us and him. What those on that site you mentioned are doing is making muslim look like we are backward and ignorant, I seek refuge with Allah from that, and the danger is that they attribute this wrong to Allah, so my question is are they muslim for that action takes them outside the folds of islam.salaam mike

sorry i don't follow our pronoun to andecedent relationship? who is "they"? the website producers? i doubt they claim to be muslims. or the "scholars" who claim a flat earth? i would imagine such a mistake doesn't take you outside the folds of islam. i think shirk is about the only thing to take someone outside the folds of islam. well, and according to you , being gay? and being ahmadi?

not sure so i asked once who are kufar and i think your wife said anyone who doesn't believe in muhammad as the final prophet of god. but don't the alawites and druze..

(May 23 at 10:53) mikejm4 mikejm4's gravatar image

deify ali or even bashir himself? maybe not the druze. so is there something between kufar and muslim? are the shia outside the fold. somebody just blew some of them up for being "hereitics". this is why i try to ask simple yes and no questions like can jinn have sex with humans? but you don't have to worry about who i think is a muslim or not. it's your fellow muslims you should worry about. but if i were you i wouldn't worry too much considering you are protected in the country you have no alligence to. so at least everyone here agrees the earth is spherical. happy memorial day.

@Mike - Neither Islam, Christianity, nor Judaism give an age limit that prevents a girl from marrying while 'younger.' Only Islam mentions a 'marriageable age' which is understood to be puberty. Having said that - yes, Ibn Baaz was one of those who had the view that a minor may be married off by her father, on the condition that such a marriage is necessary. But consummation still has to be later, when the girl is physically ready.

good reason not to be a muslim, christian or jew. or to impliment their ancient laws in a modern knowlegable society that understands a girl is not a woman just because she menstrates. you would think the omninscient god would know these things? you know being that he created humans. one who is not gullible might even question why he didn't tell his "last messenger" to relay the true about human development and sexuality. you did see the 8 year-old girl in yemen die from internal bleeding on her wedding night a couple of months ago? do you know the youngest gilr recorded giving birth was

(May 28 at 12:02) mikejm4 mikejm4's gravatar image

5 years old? do you know what obstetric fistula is?

the abrahamics don't give a minimun age for marriage. that is why reasonable people seperate religion and governance.
