Assalam Walaikum,

I have recently changed my job and and joined a hospitality Industry. I am in Human Resource department. In the property where I work has a Bar section as well, where Alcohol is being served and sold. So, my concern is my earnings i.e salary Haram or Halal?

Please help me in above concern.

Salam Brother,

‘Truly, Allah has cursed alcohol and has cursed the one who produces it, the one for whom it is produced, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who carries it, the one for whom it is carried, the one who sells it, the one who earns from the sale of it, the one who buys it, and the one for whom it is bought’.

(Reported by al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah, on reliable authority).

It is clear from the above that a Muslim may not import or export alcoholic drinks; or own or work in a place that sells them.

You know better than I that the hospitality industry covers a wide range of sectors and business, and includes travel and tourism; sport and leisure; gaming; hotels, pubs and restaurants.

You work in Human Resources (so did I) and so do not earn your living by selling alcohol to customers directly. You are paid to provide HR services, and nothing more.

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said, "An adulterer, at the time he is committing illegal sexual intercourse is not a believer; and a person, at the time of drinking an alcoholic drink is not a believer; and a thief, at the time of stealing, is not a believer."

Sahih Bukhari: Volume 7, Book 69, Number 484

A thief at the time of stealing is not a believer. Anyone who gives assistance to a thief at the time of stealing is guilty, by association, of that very theft; and is therefore not a believer.

If one gives (or sells) an alcoholic drink to another and that person then drinks it; while he is drinking, both the giver and the drinker become unbelievers.

If your company earns money (any amount of money at all) through the sale of alcohol, then all who work for it, and who - by their services - enable it to function are guilty by association.

Essentially, this is what is being said in the two Hadith I have quoted. It is up to you to reflect on them; and to decide how you respond.

May Allah (Subḥānahu wa Ta'Ala) guide you to the correct decision. He knows best.

Yo Bruv chill. Unless you are working in a pub or bar then that's fine. If you ask any extremist, he would say working in a non muslim state is haram. Because the money u are getting is somehow connected to haram stuff.

Assalamualaikum AskIslam2014. Assalamualaikum Akhil176. Brother Akhil, you need to remember both AskIslam and me are just normal people like you and me.We are random internet users, and we are definitely not sheikhs or students of knowledge or hafiz of the Quran. Infact many users in this site have never even read the whole of Quran or Bukhari or Muslim, let along memorize it. So we are pretty ignorant, you would agree brother AskIslam2014 right? So ask a Sheikh or the imam from your mosque. Someone who has knowledge. Dont ask us and expect to get the right answer.

If you come here in Essex, you would see loads of Muslims working in Tesco or Sainsbury or other stores which sells Alcohol as well. I think there is no harm working there.

Just chill, these are minor things, no need to worry about.
