How about Sikhism, do you know anything about that religion?

The angel Jibril came to the Prophet once, disguised as a man, and asked him to explain Islam (along with other aspects of the religion) while his companions witnessed. Narrated through many reliable sources, this is known as the Hadith of Jibril. The relevant section goes something like this:

He (Jibril) sat with the Prophet and knelt before him. He asked, "Muhammad, tell me about Islam."

The Messenger of Allah said, "Islam is that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and that you establish prayer, pay the zakat, observe the fast of Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage (i.e., the Hajj) if you can afford the journey.

He (Jibril) said, "You have told the truth."

A muslim is just someone who accepts these five Pillars of Islam; there is no ritual involved or "right way" to convert to Islam. Just reciting the Shahadah (i.e., "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah") to another muslim is enough to let them know that you have accepted Islam for yourself. This may be done in Arabic (laa ilaha illa-llah muhammadur-rasuulu-llah) but it's the meaning and intent that is important.

Beyond that, finding a local mosque or muslim community that performs the regular prayers is the best way to learn the basics of the religion, such as how to establish prayer.
