Assalam o alaikum. I have a very important question that I think is discouraging me. Recently, ive tried to get closer to islam and pray salah and read quran. I have also decided to read quran with translation in ramadan because i havent read it with translation before and i can understand arrabic. Now my question is that is arabic a MANDATORY requirement for a muslim? I am 21 years old, about to get a job and I wont have much time to study arabic at this stage of my life. If i would have started at an earlier age, then it would have been easier. I have heard people saying that arabic is must for islam. I know some surahs that i learnt when i was a kid and im hoping to learn a few more for salah. but i just get discourages that this is not enough and i need to know arabic in order to perform salah because i need to understand what im saying in the salah. also, i want to acheive khushoo in salah whwich people say is only possible if u know arabic. even though my recitation of quran is not perfect, i am willing to improve it but i just dont want to learn the arabic language at this stage. please tell me if its possible to be a good muslim without understanding the arabic language if i understand quran through translation and if i can recite surahs from quran.

jazakallah.

yeah, you and ifran need to grow a beard. lol.

that way when you try to push me from the middle of the road i can grab it and throw you to the ground. then step on you. i know how you muslims consider the bottom of a shoe a great insult.

No. Knowing Arabic is not a must for Islam (if it was, then it would be very hard for non-Arabs to enter it - and Allah سبحانه و تعالى does not intend difficulty for His followers), but you need to strive to learn it when possible. No one disagrees that it is best to learn Arabic. So if there is no way for you to learn it now, then learn it in the future إن شاء الله.. and in the meanwhile, just read the 'translations'/interpretations to understand the general meaning. But what is mandatory is that Muslims memorize ayahs from the Qur'an (& duas from sunnah) in Arabic (which is easy to do). Salah can not be prayed in any other language; only Arabic. Hope this helps.

Also - my dear brother, just a reminder.. beard is a requirement in Islam. I understand that some brothers have hardship when it comes to this (just as sisters have hardship when it comes to hijab), but when you leave something for the sake of Allah سبحانه و تعالى, then Allah سبحانه و تعالى substitutes it with something better. May Allah سبحانه و تعالى make things easy for you.

It makes sense to learn Islam is in arabic. It is recommended so you don't have to put extra time reading translation; just read arabic and thats it ;)
