What is the funtion of praying Nawafil prayers.

I was wondering why we pray nafila after or before fard prayer. So i ask a friend of mine he said that when we pray the nawafil it will repair our fard prayers the one will did not perform well & it will get us closer to Allah & our prayers will be answer shortly. So my question is that, this answers that my friend told me is it correct and is there any addition answers to this from an autentic hadth. What is the funtion of Nawafil.
