In south asia, there is one kind of Dowry or whatever you call it. The woman or her family pays the husband large ammount of money before the marriage which is kind of opposite to the Mahr or whatever you call it.

Is it permissible in Islam?

tahmeed, the short answer is no. in islam you don't pay a dowery to the man or his family. you in india. i saw a muslim comment on this because of the increased attention given the 'burning bride' problem in india.
