Salam,

During Ramadan there is this prayer called Taraweeh (sorry I don't know how to spell it in English). Is it a must in Ramadan, at a curtain age perhaps. Why do we do Taraweeh in Ramadan?

Thanks

Wa alaykumus salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,

Taraweeh is not fardh:

It was narrated by 'Urwa The Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam went out in Radaman and prayed the night prayer one night. In the 2nd and 3rd night people prayed behind him. On the 4th night he stopped and said that he did not continue because he did not wish for people to think it (Taraweeh) to be obligatory (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol. 3, Book 32, Hadith 22)

As for why we pray Taraweeh in Ramadan:

From the previous hadeeth and its surrounding ahadeeth we know that Taraweeh in Ramadan is a Sunnah and it is prescribed:

Narrated Abu Hurrairah: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying regarding Ramadan, "Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." (Sahih Al Bukhari Vol. 3, Book 32, Hadith 226)
