As-salamu alaikum, brother.

Many years ago I experienced exactly the symptoms you describe. Although I did not see anything, I felt a great presence of evil in my room, and the desperate need to call on Allah (Subḥānahu ūta'āla) for help. As soon as I did so the presence of evil - and the symptoms that went with it - vanished.

This is a phenomenon known as sleep paralysis. It can occur either when one is about to fall asleep or - as in our case - when awakening. It is a temporary state accompanied in every case by total muscle weakness (hence the inability to move); and often by very scary visions.

When we fall into a dream state our muscles become deeply relaxed. This is a natural defence against acting out our dreams. When a dream state is disrupted the result is sleep paralysis (or so it is claimed). Many believe that what we have experienced is an attack by the shaytan.

Sleep paralysis has been linked to anxiety disorders; to migraine; to sleep apnoea; and to narcolepsy. It can be an isolated event (as mine was); or one that recurs. Recurrent sleep paralysis should be investigated, because of its link to more serious medical conditions.

I was a newly converted Catholic when this happened to me (I am no longer a Christian). When I told my friend (a very down-to-earth Catholic priest) about it he was very concerned; and made me aware of the need for prayer and for (God’s) protection against the devil.

It is said that such attacks can be prevented by sleeping on your right side.

It is recommended that you read what is known as the ‘Throne Verse’ from the Holy Qur’an:

‘Allah: there is no god but Him, the Ever Living, the Ever Watchful. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. All that is in the heavens and in the earth belongs to Him. Who is there that can intercede with Him except by His leave? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, but they do not comprehend any of His knowledge except what He wills. His throne extends over the heavens and the earth; it does not weary Him to preserve them both. He is the Most High, the Tremendous’.

(Al-Baqara: verse 255).

Commit this verse to your heart. Seek the protection and mercy of Allah (Subḥānahu ūta'āla), and strive to live according to His commands. Do this, and the shaytan will not be able to harm you.

I hope this helps.

paul, whats up? you start with an evil presence, flip to a medical explaination and then back to the shaytan? so is it the shaytan that cause all medical illnesses? should you stay away from those with medical illnesses for fear of being in proximity to shaytan?
