Playing a musical instrument

   The only musical instrument which is taken as permissible and used during the time of Prophet(SAW) was duff accompanied by song, that too, on some special occasions and weddings but not as a pass-time. Songs of those times were all about Allah's hamd, ghazwat and of such nature.

   Please compare the past practice with the present and decide for yourself in the light of Quran and sunnah. Wasslam.

There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of maaazif ( musical instruments ).`

Hadith - Bukhari 7:494 Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks, and the use of musical instruments as lawful.  And (from them), there will be some who will stay near the side of a mountain, and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and Allah will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection."

Rasul Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “Allah Mighty and Majestic sent me as a guidance and mercy to believers and commanded me to do away with musical instruments, flutes, strings, crucifixes, and the affair of the pre-Islamic period of Ignorance.” [Abu Dawud]

If you ask a question always ask for verses from the Quran and hadiths, as it's proof, and nowadays anyone can write anything, and some thinks there opinions right.

 Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer explains Surah Luqman, ayah 6 as under:

     It is about those people who instead of profiting by listening to Allah's Words listen to songs and music. It further states that hadrat Abdullah bin Masood(RA) explaining this ayah said,'I swear on Allah that it means singing and music.' Hadrat Ibn-e-Abbass(RA) also stated the same in the explanation of this ayah. 
 With this explanation of the Quranic Surah given in Tafseer Ibn-e-Kaseer, which is known as the MOTHER OF ALL TAFASEER, and a hadith of Bokhari Sharif mentioned above, MUSIC, SONGS, MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS (EXCEPTING DUFF), whether playing or listening is haram. There is nothing like good music or bad music, as once mentioned by Al-Ummat at another place.
  RasoolAllah(saw) said:' I swear on Him in whose Hands my life is that none out of you could be a Momin until and unless he makes his desires follow the thing that I have brought.'[or as he(SAW) said].

My friend ! It cannot be haram In my opinion ! Becoze , music is everywhere , even you go to shopping center you here music , when you watch tv you hear music . Music is something that makes you brain sleep ... It makes you happy or sad . Music is like a mirror , it shows feelings ... It cannot be haram , some imams says that , "Quran says its haram" , but dont believe them . In Quran there is nothing about music . If you love it , play it ! I play guitar :)
