What percentage is paid as zakat? Can I as a muslim pay my zakat to a friend in dire needs for survival who doesn't have any body willing to help? Though, she was born into christianity but don't really practice.

Zakat can only be given to a Muslim. Percentage is 2.5% of the amount on which zakat is due.
