Assalam aleikum! I converted to Islam for one year ago, alhamduila! My question is, i read and hear many places that there will be 73 ways of following Islam till the last day, then one of 73 will be saved by Mohammed PBUH and the 72 others will not come to paradise because they have not follow the right Islam? Is this true? And how can i know wich one is the right, sunni, shija? Sorry for my bad english!

Masnad and Sunnan state the hadith which goes like this; RasoolAllah(SAW) said: 'Jews were divided into 71 firqah, Christian into 72, this ummah will be divided into 73 firqah - all are juhanami except for one.' When asked as to which one was the exception, RasoolAllah(SAW) said, 'The one which would follow what I and my companions follow.'

So, what all the Muslims need to do is to follow Quran and sunnah. Quran must be recited but more important is that it is understood in the language one speaks. After Arabic script its translation must be read in one's own language, along-with its tafseer to understand/mediate over it with the view to follow it. Hadrat Aeisha(RA) said that RasoolAllah(SAW) was a 'Walking Quran', i.e., he(SAW) was Quran-in-practice. Therefore, in order to bring Quran to practice, one has to study hadith which one MUST do as early as possible. Sihah Sita (six authentic books of ahadith - Bokhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, Nisai, Tirmizi and Mota') must be consulted by every one to gain guidance in day to day affairs to ensure all acts and deeds remain in accordance with the sunnah and hence acceptable to Allah. Surah Muhammad, ayah 33 reads: 'O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the messanger, and render not your actions vain.'
Please ponder over all that is said above. JazakAllah.

Answer by The Permanent Committee: What is meant by the term 'Ummah' in this Hadith is the Ummah of response which shall be divided into seventy-three sects; seventy-two of which are deviant who practice innovated religious practices that do not constitute apostasy. Each shall be tortured in accordance to its innovations, and deviation, except for those whom Allaah pardons and forgives. Their final abode will be Paradise. The only sect that will be safe is Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama'ah, who adhere to the Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and hold fast to what he and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) were holding. It is they about whom the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "A group of my Ummah shall remain steadfast, on the truth, victorious, unharmed by those who oppose them, and do not support them, until the death or until the Day of Resurrection." [1]

As for those whose innovation casts them out of Islam, they belong to the Ummah of invitation (mankind at large) not the Ummah of response. They shall remain in the Hell-Fire forever, and this is the most valid opinion.

It is also said that the term 'Ummah' in this Hadith means the Ummah of invitation, which is a general term including all those to whom the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was sent (i.e., mankind) those who believe and those who do not believe. Whereas the term 'the saved sect' is the Ummah of response, which strictly applies to those who believe in the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), trustfully, and die on this condition. This is the sect that will be safe from [the] Fire; either by prior punishment or without prior punishment, and their final abode will Paradise.

Salam and welcome to Islam. I have knowledge and background to both Shia and Sunni and both have some good arguments for and against each other so I do recommend you stay away from sectarian stuff and don't worry about this Hadith so much. Focus on pillars of Islam, continue asking Allah (s.w.t) for guidance and he will continue showing the right path.
