Indeed, those who disbelieve - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe. Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.

Surah Bakarah Ayah 6-7

Assalamu alaikum. I'm a Muslim from a Muslim family but I haven't ever been truly religious. Recently, I've been trying to understand Islam more, in the hope that faith can be reinforced in me. While reading the translation of the Quran, these lines confused me. If Allah has set a seal upon the disbelievers and it has been predestined that they will not believe, why are they punished?

Brother..It was when I'm trying to get the answer for the same question i found this post.I was trying to answer for that and i was convinced when i read translation for ayath 6.Im trying to explain you the logic in that but allah knows the best "It is they who follow guidance from their Lord, and it is they who shall achieve real success." "Verily, those who have adopted disbelief, it is the same for them whether you warn them or you warn them not, they will not believe." "Allah (as a result of their own choice) has set a seal on their hearts and their ears, and there is a blindfold (set) over their eyes. And for them there is a severe torment."

If a man jumps from a tall building its law of nature make him injured o.w Allah make him injured. Its the mans choice to jump or not Similarly It's the person's choice to believe in allah or not based on the signs and path he has shown us.Even after this if he disbelieves he(allah) "set a seal on their hearts and their ears" if he believes (may be after his disbelief he decide to believe in the warning from prophet about allh ) allah will guide him to the right path

In the judgment of mankind at the end of this world, God’s attributes of supreme justice and fairness also become manifest. Based on His infinite knowledge, God could have created all members of the human race who were to live on earth and immediately placed some of them in paradise and the remainder in hell. Before creating man, Allaah already knew what choices they would make in this life, what provision and opportunities.

If God had immediately placed those headed for paradise in paradise, they would not question God’s decision. Those in paradise would happily accept an everlasting life of bliss and be thankful that they were not placed in hell. However, those immediately placed in hell would ask why. They would feel a sense of unfairness due to their ignorance of what they would have done had they lived on earth. Those in hell would relentlessly argue that had they been given a chance to live out their lives on earth, they would have believed and done righteous deeds. Consequently, Allaah allows human beings to live out their lives on earth and make all the choices they would have made, so that everyone who enters hell will know that they chose hell by themselves. They will recognize God’s mercy in their lives and acknowledge their sin in rejecting His signs and guidance. And they will accept His judgment as being just and beyond reproach. However, they will still beg for another chance to do good in this world, as God says in Chapter as-Sajdah of the Qur’aan:

“If only you could see [the time] when the sinners will bow their heads before their Lord, [saying], ‘Our Lord! We have now seen and heard, so send us back and we will do righteous deeds. Verily, we now believe with certainty.” Quran, 32:12

However, if Allaah were to send them back to this world having forgotten what they had seen of hell, they would again choose evil and end up in hell as before. God spoke about this in Chapter al-An‘aam,

“But if they were returned [to this world], they would certainly go back to what was forbidden to them. Indeed they are liars.” Quran, 6:28

Had Allaah wished, He could have created mankind like angels, incapable of committing sin. However, that was not His wish, as He had already created angels. Human beings were created capable of making mistakes and when they realize their errors and seek God’s forgiveness, the divine attributes of mercy and forgiveness become manifest.

No matter how great the sins of human beings may be, God can forgive them if man turns back to Him in sincere repentance. The Messenger (saw) was quoted as saying, “When Allaah created the universe, He made an obligation on Himself [recorded] in a document kept by Him: My mercy supersedes my wrath.”

He was also reported to have said, “[Allaah created] mercy with one hundred parts, one of which was sent down upon the jinn, human beings and other living beings. It is out of this one part that they love each other, show kindness to each other and even the animals treat their offspring with affection. Allaah has reserved the remaining ninety-nine parts for His true worshippers on the Day of Resurrection.”

Also, remember that Allah not only judges our deeds, but also our intentions. So if a disbeliever already intends to deny the truth, even before having the opportunity to actually deny it, he is judged by that intention.

Sahih Muslim Book 020, Hadith Number 4692: It has been narrated on the authority of Umar b. al-Khattab that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: (The value of) an action depends on the intention behind it. A man will be rewarded only for what he intended.

God created mankind knowing that they would disobey Him. Consequently, He taught human beings, beginning with Adam, how to repent and thereby purify themselves of their sins. Adam and Eve represent a pattern for all mankind to follow. They forgot the commandment of God, and Satan played on their desires. After they had disobeyed God, they turned back to Him in repentance, and He forgave them.

No matter how great the sins of human beings may be, God can forgive them if man turns back to Him in sincere repentance. The Messenger (saw) was quoted as saying, “When Allaah created the universe, He made an obligation on Himself [recorded] in a document kept by Him: My mercy supersedes my wrath."

Had Allaah wished, He could have created mankind like angels, incapable of committing sin. However, that was not His wish, as He had already created angels. Jazak Allah Brother for understanding the concept.. Brother this life a test for thereafter.. all the human beings whether muslim or non muslim are undergoing the test.. the higher the test is the greater the reward he will get. Allah swt has got power over all things HE can tell all of us about his presence & can destroy all other religions but then this life will no longer will be considered as a test, as everybody will start obeying him.. In a class room if a teacher tells answer to candidates then it will no longer be considered as a test. The verse you are quoting means that Allah swt has put a seal in heart of unbelievers, whatever evidence you show to them they will considered it as a lie. when they are with believers they say we are with you only, but when they go back to their peer group they say we are only with you, we were just deceiving the believers, Allah swt says they dont deceive the believers but only themselves . They are deaf dumb blind, whatever evidence you show them they will decline it. Allah swt has set a seal in their hearts. They hear but dont listen. Brother if a muslim pass out in the test he will go to jannah but if a non beliver revert ( im not using word convert as he was born muslim later convert to hindu/christian now returning to islam) to islam he has pass a higher test so he will get a higher reward.. the difficult the test is the higher would be the reward.. As I told you Allah swt has got ilme ghaib about things Allah swt knows certain people will not accept the truth even if it is shown to them in this world that is why Allah swt has put a seal in their heart. It is not because Allah has put a seal that is why they are not believing it is because They will not believe that is why Allah swt has put seal in their heart. Broher if all the human beings go to jannah then who will go to watch movies, pubs. most verily the fuel of hell is human beings Allah swt loves us more than our mother He loves us equal to love of 70 mothers. He loves repentance.. He dont wash away the sins of a repented person He even change it into good deeds.. Alhamulillah Brother I can only deliver the message which I have got from Quran & Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Hadith.. it is upto you to decide as there is no compulsion in religion.. May Allah swt give you hidayath & make you one of the believers.. Aameeen !!!!

Assalama Alykum brothers & sisters, before answering the question I would like to tell the definition of Muslim. The Prophet (PBUH) also said, "Each child is born in a state of "Fitrah", muslim then his parents make him a Jew, Christian or a Zoroastrian. Muslim is not by merely keeping a muslim name i.e. aslam, javed, riaz etc . Muslim is the one who submits his will to Allah swt. One whose name is shahid but he keep doing things accordingly to his wishes then, he is not a Muslim.YOU DONT COME TO THIS WORLD BY YOUR WILL, YOU DONT LEAVE THIS WORLD BY YOUR WILL THEN, YOU LIVE IN THIS WORLD ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL..... Now, coming to your question that if it is predestined for some people to disbelieve in Allah swt then, why would they get punishment for the predestioned act. It is like that in my destiny it was written that I would commit adultery, theft, murder then WHY should I be punished. go ask GOD for this I AM ONLY PERFORMING THE DESTINED ROLE.Im poor because it is written in my destiny. Brother & Sister first we have to understand the concept of destiny. Allah says in Quran that when a child is born we write down all his destiny behind his neck.Allah swt has ilme ghaib about the future. Allah swt knows about the thing previously before it occurred in future. Somethings are prefixed where you will born , die but other things you have got free will. Allah swt has given hidayath in quran but it is upto you to beleive in it or not. Before you do a thing Allah swt knows what would you do. Example: You are walking on a lane , you reach a cross road from where 4 roads are parting aways i.e. road 1, road2, road3, road4. you can choose any road. suppose you choose road no. 3. Allah swt has ilme ghaib (divine knowledge ) about this that when you will reach cross road you will choose road no. 3. That is why, Allah swt write it before that you will choose road no. 3. It is not because Allah swt has written that is why you have choosen road3, it is because you will be choosing road3 & Allah swt know about it & Allah swt has write down it in advance. It is called Ilme Ghaib. Another Example:- you have passed 12th you have got choice to become doctor or engineer. you chooses to become doctor. ALLAH SWT KNOWS ABOUT IN ADVANCE THAT WHEN YOU WILL PASS 12TH YOU WILL CHOOSE TO BECOME DOCTOR. SO, ALLAH SWT HAS WRITE IT DOWN IN YOUR DESTINY THAT YOU WILL BECOME DOCTOR AFTER PASSING 12TH. it is not because Allah swt has written that is why you will become doctor IT ONLY BECAUSE YOU WILL BE CHOOSING TO BECOME DOCTOR & ALLAH SWT KNOWS ABOUT THE FUTURE EVENTS. SO, ALLAH SWT WRITES DOWN THAT YOU WILL BECOME DOCTOR. some people are like tomorrow is exam day, if its written in my destiny that will pass then only i will pass. he dont study & fails in examination. It is written in his destiny by Allah swt that if he had studied he would have passed the exam but his mind is just opposite. ONLY THAT PERSON IS TO BLAME FOR HIS FAILURE.. IT WRITTEN IN HIS DESTINY THAT IF HE HAD STUDIED HE WOULD HAVE PASSED THE EXAM. But now, when he got failed he says It is written in my destinty to fail & nobody can change destiny......... Destiny can be changed by prayer. so keep praying.. Every moment we make our heaven/hell... We live life according to our wish & we pay for it in hereafter. So brothers & sisters keep praying namaz & keep praying, it will change your destiny.**

Okay, I get what youre saying.. that only certain things are predestined and that we have free will in most other things.. but Allah knows about it in advance. But in THESE lines of Al Baqarah, it SPECIFICALLY says that Allah has set a seal upon their hearts, which means that it IS predestined.

But it's okay, Im not too confused about those lines anymore :)

It is reasonable to say that no one can be punished for something they have no control over because Allah is Just.

I believe this verse refers to those disbelievers who have hardened their hearts, not being open to accept the truth when it is shown to them. For these disbelievers, there is nothing you can say or do to change their minds.

Whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray - it is those who are the losers. And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless. (7:178-179)

Then there are disbelievers who are open to accepting the truth when they hear it. These Allah allows to become believers.

Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [in mind]. (50:37)

Allah knows best.
