Assalamu alaikum

The essential things to know before becoming are Muslim are the Pillars of eman(faith) and the pillars of Islaam (actions)

The Pillars of emaan are six: 1: To believe in God (Allaah) that he is The One and Only God without partners, that He alone created the heavens and the earth and that He alone deserves to be worshipped. 2: To believe in the Angels He created, including Angel Gabriel who sent the revelations to the Prophets. 3: To believe in all the Prophets including Abraham, Moses and Jesus and Muhammad is the final messenger(peace be upon them all). 4: To believe in all the books, The Tawrah (old testament) Zabur (psalms of David), gospels (new testament) and the Quran is the final revelation which has been preserved. 5: To Believe in the Day of Judgment and that we will all stand to be judged for our actions and the believers will be rewarded with Paradise and the disbelievers will be recompensed with Hellfire. 6: To believe in Divine decree, that whatever occurs in our lives has been decreed by Allaah (god) the almighty, whether it be good or bad.

The Five Pillars of Islaam: 1: To testify that There is no God besides Allaah and that Muhammad is His messenger. 2: To pray five times a day at prescribed times. 3: To Fast the month of Ramadhaan (between dawn and sunset). 4: To give obligatory charity (zakaat) which is 2.5 of excess wealth owned for a year (the amount on gold etc. is paid differently) 5: To make the pilgrimage (hajj) to Makkah once in your life if you have the ability (physically and financially)

To become a Muslim you only need to utter the 1st pillar of Islaam, testimony:

Ash hadu an laa ilaaha illaallaah wa ash hadu anna muhammadan rasoolullaah (I testify that there is no God besides Allaah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah)

After that one needs to take a complete shower for purification of previous sins and then begin learning how to pray.

If any form of certification is required then the above testimony will need to be repeated in front of a Muslim Leader.

Insha Allaah you find this helpful
