Muslims are forbidden to imitate the kuffaar by lightning up homes(I am only mentioning this activity since your question is based on this) etc., because the Prophet MUHAMMAD(pbuh said: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah said in his book Iqtidaa’ al-siraat al-mustaqeem mukhaalifat ashaab al-jaheem: "Imitating them in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the opportunity to humiliate and mislead the weak."

Whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, whether he does it out of politeness or to be friendly or for whatever other reasons as this is hypocrisy in Islam because it is a kind of compromising the religion of Allah to please others, and it is a means of lifting the spirits of the kuffaar and making them feel proud of their religion..!!

What the Muslim is required to do is not to JOIN or imitate them in any of the things that resembles in pleasing them otherwise it would be equal to joining the kuffaar in their festivals, which is something that is undoubtedly haraam...!!
