Salamalaikom dear brother,

Yes he did know how to swim. When Muhammad (SAW) was about three years old, he decided to return live with her mother in Mecca. Three years later, AminahHer Mother decided to take her son*Muhammad(Saw) to visit his uncles in Yathrib. They stayed there for about a month and Muhammad(Saw) was enjoying the visit with his cousins. The climate in Yathrib was very pleasant and he learned to swim and to fly a kite. On their way back to Mecca, however, Aminah became ill and died.

So, he learned to swim at the age of 6.

Inshallah I hope it helped.

Oh! The kite was created by the chinese in the 5th century Before Christ. Mohammad(Saw) was born far after. China is close to Mecca. It was probably spreaded throughout Asia. The kite was used by the chinese like a messenger. Flying kites cannot be considered unlawful in themselves, unless(of course)if they are used to unjustly harm something, for instance, using kite string coated with shards of glass that can sever electricity and telephone wires, etc. However, the activity in itself may be disliked due to being a waste of time and mostly devoid of any physical or intellectual benefit.

Well I am not sure if Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) knew how to swim, but if you are concerned with it being lawful or not, well then Islam does not prohibit one from physical exercise. If you are swimming in a proper place (no mixing of the sexes) and you are wearing shorts that are appropriate then there is no harm...!!

Exercise infact is great for your health. It provides benefits to your body and mind. So if you are taking care of yourself, then it is an excellent form of being grateful to Allah...!!!
